All About Tunku Abdul Rahman College - 41 Years of Excelent Education


Mar 1968
YABhg Tun Tan Siew Sin, the President of MCA proposed the establishment of Tunku Abdul Rahman College in the MCA General Assembly.

Jul 1968
Press announcement on the establishment of TAR College by the Minister of Education, YBhg Tan Sri Mohamed Khir Johari in the presence of YBhg Tan Sri Khaw Kai-Boh, Chairman of the Working Team and committee members.

The Prime Minister, Y T M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, graciously assented to the College being named after him.

24 Feb 1969 - Foundation Day
The College commenced operations with the pioneer intake of 320 students at the School of Pre-University Studies.

April 1971
Establishment of the School of Business Studies, where the Diploma in Commerce students were prepared simultaneously for the examinations of ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), UK. The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), UK. In 1978, the School introduced the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK examinations.

Establishment of the Extra-Mural Studies Department (EMSD).

Establishment of the School of Technology and School of Arts and Science.

Sep 1972 - College Establishment Day
YABhg Tun Hussein Onn, Minister of Education handed the Instrument of Government to YABhg Tun Tan Siew Sin, President of the College at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Kuala Lumpur. This instrument provided the legal framework for the administration of the College.

Feb 1973
A 191acres of land in Setapak, KL was approved by the Government for the construction of the TAR College Main Campus.

Aug 1973
Y T M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, planting a tree to commemorate the ground breaking ceremony for the permanent campus of the College in KL.

May 1974
The first batch of students under the School of Arts and Science for the BSc (External) University of London Examinations. TAR College phased out the University of London course by 1980, after the University of London terminated its BSc (Honours) External Degree worldwide. A total of 296 students from TAR College had graduated from this programme.

Jan 1975
Three British experts, Prof W. D. Ryan, Department of Electronics, Queen’s University of Belfast, Prof F. D. Hales, Department of Surface Transport and Dr G. G. Lucas, Department of Transport Technology, both of Loughborough University of Technology, UK inspected the building site at the Main Campus, Kuala Lumpur.

Together with the assistance of the British Council and the Council for Technical Education and Training for Overseas Countries, British academics including these three experts advised on the College new courses and curriculum development.

By 1976, the College became one of the first institutions of higher learning in the country to offer professional, sub-professional and technical courses.

Jan 1977
Completion of the phase 1 College Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Jan 1979
A walkathon was held to raise funds for the TAR College Student Loan Fund.

May 1979
The College Council approved the establishment of an institutional tripartite linkage between TAR College, Campbell University, North Carolina, USA and Ulster Polytechnic, Northern Ireland, UK. Under the Tripartite Association, a Centre for Arts and Science was established under the School of Arts and Science of TAR College to administer the Bachelor of Science (BS), Campbell University degree programme.

Feb 1979 - Reaching the 10th Anniversary Mark
The 10th Anniversary celebration graced by Y T M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and YABhg Tun Tan Siew Sin.

1981
Commencement of the construction of the Phase 2 building project on the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus which comprised a tutorial block, workshops, a student centre and a canteen.
The expansion was necessary to meet the increasing demand for places of study at the College.

The student enrolment in 1980 stood at 6,272, a ninefold increase since the inception of the College in 1969.

Feb 1982
The College held its first Convocation Ceremony at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

24 February 1989 - 20th Anniversary Celebration
Our 20th Anniversary celebration included Pesta, fashion and cultural shows, lion dance performances and an academic exhibition. The Campus was opened to the public to view the College facilities.

Jun 1992
A Taxithon was held where 3,000 taxi drivers from 21 associations and companies took part in the fund-raising.

Oct 1992
YABhg Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik flagged off a Walkathon in the Main Campus, Kuala Lumpur.

Nov 1992
YABhg Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik launched the nationwide TAR College Torch Run in the Main Campus. The run was organised by MCA Youth and the Federation of TAR College Alumni Associations.

Oct 1997
YABhg Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik received a cheque in conjunction with the 7-day Motorthon fund-raising project for the Perak and Johor Branch Campuses.

Nov 1997
A TAR College Scholarship scheme was introduced.

Jan 1998
Commencement of the Perak Branch Campus in Kampar.

Jun 1999
TAR College Penang purpose-built Campus at Tanjong Bungah was officially launched by YABhg Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Deputy Prime Minister.

Jul 1999
The Johor Branch Campus was officially launched by YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, Minister of Education.

1995
The Main Campus Library moved into a new building. The Library was installed with a new library management system, the Virginia Tech Library Sysatem (VTLS).

1995
Completion of College hall with a capacity of 2,000.

Apr 1996
The Clubhouse comprises two meeting rooms, a multi-purpose hall, two squash courts, a gymnasium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a learner’s pool and a poolside cafeteria.

May 1998
Completion of 10 blocks of 5-storey hostels with 1,000 rooms under a Built-Operate-and-Transfer (B.O.T) basis.

1999
With the validation of the College Advanced Diploma programmes by Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), UK, the College Advanced Diploma graduates were accepted by SHU to complete a one-semester honours conversion programme for the award of relevant honours bachelor degree by SHU.

This strategic partnership has spanned more than 10 years with a total number of 5,209 TAR College students enrolled on the Summer Semester Programme by June 2009.

Aug 1999
The College held its Alumni Homecoming on a grand scale for its 30th Anniversary. It attracted 600 alumni and their families.

Dec 1999
The Centre for Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) officially established to provide continuing professional education and lifelong learning opportunities to College staff, alumni and the public.

2000
The Clubhouse and Block W which houses the Centre for Continuing and Professional Education.

2000
Rumah Tetamu comprises 20 single and 11 twin sharing rooms. The fully furnished rooms are air-conditioned with attached bathroom and internet access.

2002
TAR College developed a collaborative partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to facilitate the LJMU honours degree for the College Advanced Diploma graduates to pursue a one-semester honours degree conversion programme at LJMU.

May 2003
YABhg Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Deputy Prime Minister officiated the Perak purpose-built campus.

2004
Completion of six large lecture theatres, each with a seating capacity of 350 students.

2004
The Sports Complex comprises three rooftop tennis courts, six badminton courts, four volleyball courts, a basketball court, a netball court and two multi-purpose halls.

Aug 2002
Based on TAR College 33 years of successful track record, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) extended an invitation to MCA to form a university. A working team comprising TAR College staff prepared the working papers for the formation of the university, named as Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

Nov 2004
YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of College Council and President of MCA launched the Lifelong Learning Programme at Wisma MCA, KL.

YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of College Council officiated the 35th Anniversary Carnival.

Dec 2004
The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA) awarded maximum exemption that is normally accorded to the relevant (Honours) degree qualifications of universities to TAR College Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Business Management) graduates.

The launching of the College Motto “We Serve, We Lead, We Excel” during a Staff Dinner by YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of College Council and Ms Yoong Lai Thye, College Principal.

The Motto is to inculcate a set of work values in the staff on commitment to bringing quality education to all Malaysians, cultivating self-disciplines and exemplary actions in working as a team for desired achievements.

Mr Allen Blewitt, Chief Executive of ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), presented the ACCA Premier Plus Status Award to Ms Yoong Lai Thye, Principal of TAR College.

YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of College Council, who is also a College alumnus donated funds to set up the TARC-Toh Kim Eng Student Loan Fund in memory of his late mother.

Aug 2007
TAR College was awarded the Platinum Status, the highest level of accreditation from ACCA. The College also celebrated 20 years of excellence as an ACCA Approved Partner offering Internally Assessed programme since 1987. TAR College is the only institution outside of UK and Ireland to be accorded this special privilege to conduct the ACCA Internally Assessed programme and remain so to this day.

TAR College hosted the inaugural International Conference on Learning and Teaching at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel.

This visit by the ICSA International President and Chief Executives recognises TAR College as a key institutional stakeholder that has consistently achieved excellent performance in ICSA examination and also the largest education provider of Malaysia’s much needed pool of company secretaries.

Mar 2009 – TARC 40th Anniversary Celebrations – Marking “40 Years of Excellence”
YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman of College Council officiated the 40th Anniversary Logo with a Pictorial Exhibition on Open Day.

YBhg Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman of Resorts World Bhd presented a RM 1million cheque for the TARC-Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong Student Loan Fund, a fund established in memory of his late father.

TAR College has entered into an academia-industry collaboration with Gamuda Bhd to conduct a trainee Quantity Surveyors programme. An MoA was signed on 30 March 2009 whereby TAR College conducts a part-time Diploma in Technology (Quantity Surveying) programme to train trainee quantity surveyors for Gamuda Bhd.

A Book Loan Scheme, the first of its kind in the College in terms of book loan assistance to College students, was made possible through the contribution of RM 75,000 from Madam Tan Siok Choo, daughter of the Founder and first President of TAR College, the late YABhg Tun Tan Siew Sin.

TAR College signed a MoU with the International Centre of Cake Artistry (ICCA). The MoU marks the beginning of a strategic relationship between TAR College ad ICCA on cake-baking and certification course under the Wilton School of Cake Decorating, USA and Squires Kitchen, UK.

TAR College won the Best NATP (Novell Academic Training Partner) 2009 Award which was presented at the NATP Summit.

MoU Signing Ceremony between NCL Solutions and TAR College on SUSE Linux Innovation Club Evangelist (SLICE) Linkage and Collaboration, thereby enabling College students to be in the domain of SUSE Linux members club, to be eligible for various competitions and internships for more practical exposure and dynamic learning.

Nov 2009 – Soft Launch of the Cyber Centre: Communication & Technology Centre (CITC) at the KL Main Campus
The Cyber Centre with a built-up area of 100,000 square feet provides an ideal environment to facilitate innovative ICT practices and applications and to nurture the creativity of individuals and the College as a whole.


Dec 2009 – MoU between TAR College and Canon
TAR College signed a MoU with Canon Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd on additional benefits for the recipients of the Canon-Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (KTAR) Education Fund, whereby the graduates would enjoy priority in job applications at Canon Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd.

Master Plan for New Infrastructure - A New Administration Building
The 6- storey administration building, targeted to be completed by June 2010 is part and parcel of the ongoing developments in the master plan to improve the College facilities and services.

It will house an auditorium and an exhibition hall, besides being the administrative nerve- centre.

Adjusting to College life with Orientation Week

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College), being a premier and reputable institution in the industry is fully committed in providing quality and affordable education to many more Malaysians. In keeping to this objective, TAR College has specially organised an “Orientation Week” to help its new intake of about 4,500 freshmen in the 2010/11 Academic session to adjust to college life.

The orientation activities, held at the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus will run from 10th to 15th May 2010, and include Mass Call, Student Support Workshop, Introduction to Tertiary Studies & Study Skills, sharing sessions, telematches, and even a tour of the Kuala Lumpur.

The objectives of the abovementioned activities are to help students to adjust to college life, to provide opportunities for them to know their course mates & lecturers, to participate in the college’s co-curricular activites, sports, and to know more about student assisted services such as counselling and career guidance.

In his welcome speech in the afternoon Mass Call to about 1,800 freshies for the School of Business Studies (SBS), YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, the College Council Chairman said, “I encourage all of you to be mindful of time management, attend the lectures and follow closely the College rules and regulations. It is important to be self disciplined and participative in College activities to acquire confidence and social skills.” He also added that SBS is the largest school which has been credited for producing more than half of the nation’s accountants and urged the freshies to uphold the tradition of excellence which has been TAR College hallmark since its inception forty-one years ago.

Adding to the orientation atmosphere at the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus are brightly coloured banners and buntings with highlights on students activities, attractive booths where students can register for the talent competition. Each freshman also received welcome gifts of a T-shirt, a translucent folder and a student handbook with useful information like scholarship and grants, college bus services and sports and recreational activities.

Mr. Richard Joseph, a new student for Diploma in Technology (Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) said,” It’s a big change from secondary school life to college life. The Mass Call is an informative session for me to know the college staff.” Ms Angel Ow Yee Chee from Kuala Terengganu who is taking the Diploma in Business Studies (Management Information Systems) programme added that the icebreaking session, exchange of hand phone numbers with new course mates and online registration in co-curricular activities helps to her to connect better to college life.
