Adjusting to College life with Orientation Week
Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College), being a premier and reputable institution in the industry is fully committed in providing quality and affordable education to many more Malaysians. In keeping to this objective, TAR College has specially organised an “Orientation Week” to help its new intake of about 4,500 freshmen in the 2010/11 Academic session to adjust to college life.
The orientation activities, held at the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus will run from 10th to 15th May 2010, and include Mass Call, Student Support Workshop, Introduction to Tertiary Studies & Study Skills, sharing sessions, telematches, and even a tour of the Kuala Lumpur.
The objectives of the abovementioned activities are to help students to adjust to college life, to provide opportunities for them to know their course mates & lecturers, to participate in the college’s co-curricular activites, sports, and to know more about student assisted services such as counselling and career guidance.
In his welcome speech in the afternoon Mass Call to about 1,800 freshies for the School of Business Studies (SBS), YB Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, the College Council Chairman said, “I encourage all of you to be mindful of time management, attend the lectures and follow closely the College rules and regulations. It is important to be self disciplined and participative in College activities to acquire confidence and social skills.” He also added that SBS is the largest school which has been credited for producing more than half of the nation’s accountants and urged the freshies to uphold the tradition of excellence which has been TAR College hallmark since its inception forty-one years ago.
Adding to the orientation atmosphere at the Kuala Lumpur Main Campus are brightly coloured banners and buntings with highlights on students activities, attractive booths where students can register for the talent competition. Each freshman also received welcome gifts of a T-shirt, a translucent folder and a student handbook with useful information like scholarship and grants, college bus services and sports and recreational activities.
Mr. Richard Joseph, a new student for Diploma in Technology (Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) said,” It’s a big change from secondary school life to college life. The Mass Call is an informative session for me to know the college staff.” Ms Angel Ow Yee Chee from Kuala Terengganu who is taking the Diploma in Business Studies (Management Information Systems) programme added that the icebreaking session, exchange of hand phone numbers with new course mates and online registration in co-curricular activities helps to her to connect better to college life.
